How Do You Add Height to a Small Flower Garden?

Posted on April 27, 2021

When you are considering how to add height to a small flower garden, you have several options. You can plant tall plants and make the garden seem even higher, or you can just place few tall plants in a straight row. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Let’s take a look at these options and how you might choose between them.

When you plant a plant in the ground, it will grow to be the full height of that object. Since flower gardens are typically smaller than traditional yard gardens, you might want to keep things that way. If so, you can’t plant anything taller than the flower bed. But if you are just trying to give your flower garden an extra height, here are a few options that may work for you. You may want to try one or more of these.

One option is to add one, double stem potted plant to your bed. This is a great way to add some height to your space. Potted plants are easy to care for, and they don’t take up much extra space. Some perennials like roses and daffodils don’t need to be brought in every year. They’ll live for a year or two and then be ready to be planted again. A perennial that needs to be replanted each year is going to cause you more work as well as cost you more money.

If you want to add height, you can also try adding a trellis system. Some people have trellises made of bamboo, wood or old garden wire. It looks like a little bridge, so you can actually move it around as needed. The height from the trellis adds some mystery to the space, and it can be moved as needed.

Another option is adding a small fence around your flower bed. The fence can be decorated with iron wrought iron, or you can buy some plastic flower pots. These pots are small, so the flowers won’t overcrowd the space. You’ll be able to let certain flowers bloom into the garden without crowding other varieties. It’s a very effective method for growing flowers close to your home, but it doesn’t offer as much privacy as some other methods.

Adding flowering plants straight to your flower garden can help you with your question, “How do you add height to a small flower garden?” Most perennials will do well in most flower gardens. Some of them grow fast and show spectacular blooms during the late summer months. If you plant them next to a shrub that comes with a trellis or an arch, you’ll be able to cover some of the ground between your shrub and the plant. This way, the tree and shrub won’t competing with each other for the nutrients and water that your plant needs.

If you’re not comfortable with perennials, you can try something a little more novel in your flower garden. Try adding flowering annuals to your existing landscape. Annuals grow quickly and bloom for a long time. Some of these annuals can even outlast your perennials.

Some examples of annuals that you could add height to a small flower garden would be bells, pansies, hydrangeas, and some daffodils. You can even use annuals to fill in a gap in your flower bed between two perennials. Place a bell in a spot directly in front of a hydrangea. Since hydrangeas grow faster than most flowers, they’ll often overtook the bells within a year. In this case, you would need to repot the hydrangea in addition to planting another flower in its place.
