How Much Should I Pay a Landscape Designer?

Posted on April 3, 2021

Landscaping is a growing industry but sadly, there is still a lot of debate as to what exactly landscaping is and how much you should pay for a landscape designer. Some people say it doesn’t matter what type of landscaping design you get because it’s all the same. Others say that it does matter and by that I mean certain types of landscaping designs will require more work than others and certain landscaping ideas may just be too impractical to ever become a reality. These arguments are usually heated on landscaping forums so I decided to write an article on this exact topic to try to clear things up a bit.

When deciding on landscaping ideas, I always look at the cost of the landscaping itself first, then the cost of hiring a landscaping designer, and lastly, the cost of materials used in the landscaping design itself. I also factor in the amount of time I’ll have to put into the design and whether or not I’m planning on selling or not before deciding on the price I want to pay for a landscaping design. I never buy materials, I don’t need or think I’ll use because most times that stuff winds up in the landscaping junk yard or in the garage because there simply isn’t enough room to display it all. Landscaping design companies charge differently depending on who you get your landscaping design from. This can make a huge difference when it comes to price.

Another thing to consider is the time factor. The more time you’re willing to spend landscaping your landscape, the more expensive landscaping design is going to be. I think if you do a lot of research into what kind of materials and services are available out there, you’ll end up finding landscaping companies that offer lower prices than some of your competitors.

Landscaping companies usually have a minimum order number they require from customers, which means the more landscaping projects you complete, the more money you will be able to save by avoiding having to pay a landscaping designer for each one. The great news is that this doesn’t mean you always have to pay the full estimate, since many landscaping companies quote their prices on a per project basis, meaning you only pay what you see. It’s important to note though that if you are planning on hiring a landscape designer, they will almost always require a deposit.

The final thing to figure out is how much should I pay for a landscape design. This is where it gets a bit tricky. Most landscape companies charge different prices for residential and commercial landscaping projects. For example, a landscape design company may charge more for a small yard compared to a larger yard. They charge differently for commercial landscaping than they would for residential landscaping. So it’s a good idea to get quotes on several different landscape companies and compare them to get an idea of the cost of your project.

You will also want to find out what you can about the reputation of the landscape design company you hire. Do they have good recommendations? How well do they rate with other customers? Are there any negative reviews available for them? Finding out as much as you can about the company you plan on hiring will help you make a more informed decision about hiring the right landscape designer for your project.
