Many homeowners and pond owners enjoy the benefits of having a landscape pond but many of them do not take the time to consider the importance of taking care of it properly. There are seven very important things you can begin doing right away to ensure your pond stays healthy and clean for years to come.
Clean out the filters! A few minutes each week is all you need to accomplish this simple task. You should be able to reach in and remove debris that may be stuck within the filter system or just stuck on the bottom of the filter basket.
Sand the sand! If you have ever watched the television show Cops, you will recall the story about the police officer who would fill a small basket with sand and bait in an effort to get raccoons out of his garden. Most of these creatures would not go out into the garden so they had been trapped. The same thing happens to your pond if you do not remove any of the larger debris and dirt that cling to the bottom of the filter.
It is not enough to simply sweep the filters every few days. You also need to remove the sand and dirt so that the water is more likely to get moved through the filtration. Use a vacuum to remove large chunks of debris from the bottom of the filter basket and this will move the water through the filter more easily.
Change the water regularly so that your pond water is always clean. Only change the water on a daily basis to prevent large amounts of nitrogen from being flushed out of the system. The process of allowing nitrogen to flush out of the filter is one of the leading causes of algae growth and fungus growth in ponds.
Never use any type of filter to clean the water unless the water has been filtered with a pre-filter. Pre-filters are a common part of filter systems because they give the water a chance to return to its natural state before it passes through the entire system. The best method to use when removing large rocks, roots and other debris from the bottom of the pond is a vacuum.
There are several different types of filters including the Diatomaceous Earth filter, the Filtration Filter, and the Pocket Filter. The Diatomaceous Earth filter is one of the cheapest ways to remove large particles from the water. The Filtration Filter offers a slower method but leaves the largest particle material behind.

The Filtration Filter and the Pocket Filter both work by using a film over the top of the filter media. The Filtration Filter has two layers of filter media, while the Pocket Filter has only one layer.
If you prefer a more active approach to cleaning the water, you can introduce the process of sedimentation. Sedimentation requires the introduction of more debris from the bottom of the filter. Sedimentation is especially helpful if you have plants that would require a large amount of water or fish in your pond.
Weeds are very common in lawns and gardens. If you can find plants that do not tolerate weeds, you will have a lot less work to do when cleaning the water. Use your eyes and your nose to find plants that do not thrive in the area you live in.
After you have removed the debris, you need to clean the water in your aquarium. Make sure that the aquarium is clear of leaves and algae and water is running as clear as possible. You do not want to introduce any new and unwanted plants or fish into your aquarium.
