What Are The Plants That Repel Deer

Posted on June 13, 2021

Beautiful plants that repel deer can add an extra element to your landscaping project. The most popular deer repellent plants are the Iris. This flowery plant is among a deer’s first and most instinctual reaction to human scent. Iris has a lovely fragrance that attracts other flowers ranging from golden yellow to deep purple, lavender, mauve, blue, and black. If you enjoy growing beautiful flowers with attractive fragrances, then the Iris is perfect for you.

A Birdwatcher’s paradise, sage bushes attract songbirds to your yard by their unique scent. A birdwatcher’s paradise indeed! Sage bushes can be easily planted in your garden. You’ll find sage bushes mainly in the southern states but they do grow well in other parts of the country as well. They’re tall and old looking. The sprigs of sage can be thrown into the air and twirled around the hummingbirds to keep them away.

Important Plant Zones Bird watchers often zone in areas where they see deer avoid. Zone in the flowerbeds of your planting area. For instance, if a particular species has long flowers then you will want to zone in that particular area. Likewise, you might zone in areas where deer avoid because you find them there. You need to plant your flower beds accordingly so that you will attract the birds and not deer to eat them.

Shade Plants Shade your flower beds will allow them to bloom more fully. Shade can attract butterflies and hummingbirds, which are important elements to a well kept garden. Different types of flowers will show different seasons of the year. For example, some flowers bloom in the fall and winter months and others bloom in the spring and summer months. Knowing what seasons your flowers will bloom in will allow you to plant them accordingly and have a greater chance of attracting the species you want.

Bee Balm Plants provide another way that deer will not want to find. These plants are actually native to North America. Native Americans would often put bee balm on their head because it was believed to repel deer. The bee balm flowers at the top of the stem so that the bees can pollinate them and thus creating food for the plant. The flowers can vary in color depending on how many nectar glands are available. It will also depend on how much water is in the soil.

Fuzzy Leaved Plants You will want to plant fuzzy leaves so that deer have an even harder time knocking them off their branches. This will make it hard for them to climb higher into your garden or bush. These plants come in a wide variety of colors and growth patterns so you should easily be able to find one to match your particular zone. Fuzzy leaf plants usually grow in moist tropical climates. They are very easy to grow and provide a lush covering for any area.

Garlic Your goal is to create an odor that is unpleasant to the deer. The best way to do this is to create a scent that is too strong for them to even notice. Try planting garlic plants around your deer feeder, tall trees, and other areas where the smell of garlic will reach them. You can also place a hot compost next to the weeds where deer tend to grazing. The smell of garlic will deter deer from approaching the area.

Deer repellent plants will help keep deer out of your garden or other areas where you want to keep them out. It doesn’t take much to get them to move elsewhere so creating an odor that they will not want to be near is all it takes. Look through your garden in search of plants that repel deer and plant them where you want them to stay. You’ll find your garden will have a lot more curb appeal and your plants will be helping the deer to avoid your yard.
